"Young
Adults Are Most in Need of Drug Rehab Treatment"
The
2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) did a
comprehensive study and provides estimates on the prevalence
and patterns of the need for and receipt of drug rehab treatment
and the "gaps" that exist for people in need of
a drug rehab program. In terms of young adults what they found
was "The percent of the population in 2000 who needed
(drug rehab) treatment for an illicit drug use problem was
highest among persons aged 18 to 25 years (5.7 percent). An
estimated 1.6 million persons aged 18 to 25 needed drug rehab
treatment for an illicit drug problem in 2000."

"Heavy
Alcohol Use Among Young Adults"
The
1999 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse found that the
rate of heavy alcohol use among young adults age 18 to 25
was higher than rates observed either for youths aged 12 to
17 or for adults aged 26 or older. They also found the in
the previous year, almost 4 million young adults aged 18 to
25 had engaged in heavy alcohol use in the past month. Also,
that young adults who were heavy drinkers were more likely
to have used marijuana and other illicit drugs in the past
month compared with young adults who were not heavy drinkers.

"How
Many U.S. Young Adults are Dropouts?"
According
to data from the National Center for Educationa Statistics,
in 1999 approximately 3.8 million young adults, or 11.2 percent
of all 16 to 24 year olds in the United States, were not enrolled
in a high school program and had not completed high school.
"Suicide
is the second leading cause of death among people between
the ages of 14 to 25 in the United States"
More
than 30,000 Americans commit suicide each year, and 5000 of
